Malgorzata Mizia - artist: painter and architect

I am permanently balancing “in-between”: between designing real buildings and a carefree pouring out of purely aesthetic sensations onto canvass. I am poised between the process of a rational measuring out and metaphysical sensation; between a technical calculation and an intuitive streak of color, drawn most willingly with a spatula which is also in-between – as it is an instrument which is a resultant of an artist’s brush and a builder’s trowel. A spatula creates on canvass a spatial shape in the form of a bas-relief as well as an almost tangible gesture – an impetus of communication; it expresses an eternal balance between ratio and psyche, between the art of design and the architecture of a work of art. Additionally, the university which employs me mobilizes me to theoretical research and to philosophizing.
Today I know that this space between the arts is filled with a single Art.
The invented non-existent boundaries separate the arts from sciences, science from technology, artists from engineers. Each of us remains a technocrat to the extent he wishes, and an artist to the extent is able to. I personally practice in the profession of an architect and I paint. I learn how to design, paint and draw and how to be a humanist and artist at a technical faculty. I look for design inspirations in painting, although the latter are always crowned with the ‘picture’ of architecture.
The more I try to fathom this problem, the more obvious it becomes that there is a unity of the arts which is revealed in their mutual interactions and reflections, including even mutual borrowings of the media and artistic techniques. However it is exclusively painting that offers me the fullness of freedom. It offers an unconditional joy of unlimited gestures, means of expression and meanings. That is why an artist’s freedom of interpretation of the real world, which constitutes a contradiction of the limitations imposed by the art of architecture has dominated all other activities. By declaring that I am a painter I am able to discover my real ego. The art of architecture has focused and channeled interests onto earthly realities, but the need for freedom and empathy have chosen painting as a medium best suited to express thoughts inspired by the beauty of their everyday nature.
After all, one may explain art through the medium of architecture, just as one may explain architecture through art.
